Small hallway, lots of possibilities how to arrange it?

The small entrance hall represents a challenge of sorts. After all, it is not only the first place that welcomes us and our guests, but also the companion of our daily rituals. It should therefore be aesthetically pleasing without compromising on functionality.

A comfortably furnished entrance hall becomes almost invisible on a daily basis. We enter the house or flat, take off our shoes, hang up our jacket, put away our keys and immediately direct our steps to the bedroom, kitchen or living room. It is a space full of little helpers, where everything is in its place and every piece of furniture and accessory has a specific function.

Even a small hallway opens up space for many design experiments. Let's give it a personal touch and use the limited space to make it feel like home from the threshold.

THE SMALL HALLWAY: THE ART OF MODERATION

In a small hallway, it is important to choose the right size and number of pieces of furniture. Large cabinets and hangers can take up a lot of space, yet we want to feel at ease when welcoming guests or preparing to leave. Pay attention not only to their width, but also their height: the taller they are, the more they will dominate a small room. This is particularly important in the case of flats in blocks of flats, which not only have a narrow floor plan but also a low ceiling.

Let's also look for ways to avoid cluttering the hallway and overloading it with unnecessary items. Instead of a large wardrobe or chest of drawers taking up a lot of space, we can hang a few smaller shelves for hats, gloves and scarves. We will then have more room under our feet, for example for an ingeniously designed bench with a drawer and a comfortable cushion. A comfortable place to put on your shoes is ready!

FUNCTIONALITY IS KEY

If space is limited, it is worth opting for suspended furniture. A shoe cupboard mounted to the wall makes clever use of the space in a small hall, while leaving some space underneath for a mat or draining board.

Above all, it is worth inviting multifunctional furnishings into a small hallway. This will reduce the number of necessary items to a minimum. Modular furniture in particular will come in handy. We can create them ourselves almost from scratch - for example by reaching for the Simple collection, with which we can easily configure our own wardrobe, precisely tailored to our hallway. Over time, it can be supplemented with additional extensions to increase its capacity. It will come in handy for unexpected visits.

HOW TO OPTICALLY ENLARGE A SMALL HALLWAY?

With a few tried and tested tricks, we can make even a very small hallway appear slightly larger. The classic trick is to hang a large mirror. This addition will ensure that even a very narrow hallway does not overwhelm you and your guests. But it doesn't end there: play with colours, accessories and lighting and you will add a touch of lightness and breath to the interior.

In particular, light, neutral wall colours will help: shades of white, beige or subtle greys. In the hallway, which like no other room is exposed to dirt, a wall system will come in handy. It is easy to install, even easier to clean. It is damp-proof and impact-resistant, so you can lean your skateboard or bike against it without any problems. It also welcomes dirty children returning from the garden or playground.

We can match small wall lamps to light-coloured walls. They will help us illuminate a small hallway and avoid the impression of cramped space, additionally intensified by darkness. The arrangement of light points can be easily planned with the VOXBOX application - by creating your own virtual arrangement, you can check various combinations of hanging lamps, wall lamps and standing lamps and carefully plan the placement of other interior elements.

HALLWAY FLOORING: BRIGHT AND ROBUST

Water, mud, sand, salt, stiletto heels and dog claws - these are just some of the challenges that await our hallway floor. It's good to make sure that the surface is as abrasion and moisture resistant as possible.

In a small hallway, vinyl flooring is a good choice, as its multi-layer structure means it will look new for many years. We can choose from panels that imitate wood, stone or even concrete, blurring or emphasising the boundaries between the hallway and the other rooms in the house.

We can also confidently opt for floor panels. When choosing them, the appropriate abrasion class - AC4 or AC5 - will be crucial. For the sake of an aesthetically pleasing effect, it is best to clean them with a slightly damp material. Any dirt will be less visible if dark-coloured panels are laid on the floor.

A HOUSE WITHOUT A HALLWAY?

We can also... do without a hallway in our home! This solution is particularly suitable for the smallest flats or studios, where the hallway function can easily be combined with the living room. If you wish, the boundaries between the various functions can be marked out with furniture, for example. Even a single cupboard, hooks on the wall and a standing mirror are enough to arrange a small entrance area.

Whichever solution we choose, let's try to make our small hallway a practical, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing showpiece - one that is ours alone.
