How to design
a small flat with a balcony? online design
Zosia and Kamil are a couple brought together by their passion for cooking. Although they both spend a lot of time away from home, they like to return to their own four corners for a bit of peace and quiet. Now that they have finally settled into their own home, they decided to create a cosy flat design in a block of flats that meets their needs. And we, together with the VOXBOX app, decided to help them with this.
A comfortable sofa with a sleeping function, a large table for socialising and a capacious wardrobe to accommodate an extensive wardrobe. These are the elements that needed to be included in our protagonists' flat. Kamil and Zosia also asked us to design a small balcony, where they spend time from early spring until late autumn. An additional challenge proved to be planning the space in such a way that it would be suitable for rental in the near future. Our couple dreams of expanding their family and moving to a large house near the city.
ZOSIA AND KAMIL'S NEST, OR FUNCTIONAL FLAT DESIGN ONLINE
The small size of the flat requires careful planning. Not only the arrangement of the furniture, but also the colour of the walls, the type of flooring or the arrangement of lighting. All these elements have a huge impact on the aesthetics of the interior and its functionality. What is more, an unsuccessful arrangement can unintentionally visually reduce the available space.
When designing Kamil and Zosia's small flat in a block of flats, we therefore made sure that the interior seemed bright, warm and spacious. This is why we used vinyl panels in the colour of a wooden plank on the floor and Linerio lat hs in a natural shade on the wall in the living room. The wall panels provide an interesting backdrop for the TV and visually separate the lounge area from the dining area.
In the kitchen, the space above the cabinets is covered with Kerradeco panels with a subtle herringbone motif. This is not only an interesting aesthetic solution, but above all a practical one. When preparing meals, the occupants will not have to worry about the resulting tomato sauce stains - the panels can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth and a little detergent.
The dining area featured a classic table and chairs. Our stylist chose a folding model from the 4 You collection, which has openings hidden under the top. The occupants can use them as open shelves or fit them with special drawers, which will be useful for storing cutlery, napkins or other accessories. This piece of furniture will not take up much space on a daily basis, but when unfolded it can accommodate a whole bunch of guests.
Zosia and Kamil often spend time away from home. When they return home, however, they are happy to relax. We have therefore equipped the relaxation area with a soft Noel sofa with a sleeping function. When unfolded, it allows you to stretch your legs out comfortably, and when friends are visiting for an extended period of time, it can be used as a bed for guests.
In the lounge area, there was also room for a Creative coffee table with handy storage recesses. A sideboard and RTV cabinet from the 4 You collection stood nearby. Open shelves will be used by our tenants to display a sizeable collection of cookery books and albums. The white furniture bodies and wood-coloured elements blend beautifully together, making the interior design of the flat even cosier.
HOW TO DESIGN A FLAT WITH A SMALL HALLWAY? WE TEST VARIOUS OPTIONS
The VOXBOX app allows you to visualise various ideas. This gives us a chance to think calmly about the created arrangement and make the best decisions for ourselves. In the case of the interior design of Zosia and Kamil's flat, we thought long and hard about the appearance of the hallway.
We proposed two options to our protagonists. The first version featured a double-sided piece of furniture against the wall, i.e. a wardrobe with a side rack, in which our protagonists could accommodate all their outerwear together with their accessories. A lighter-feeling version included a bench with a drawer, a soft upholstered backrest and a mirror to optically enlarge the space. With the addition of a hanging shelf and an organiser with hangers, the tenants were in no doubt that they would opt for the second option.
FLAT BLOCK DESIGN - PLANNING A COMFORTABLE BEDROOM FOR A COUPLE
Whether a room is conducive to tranquillity and relaxation is largely determined by the colours in it. In the bedroom of our protagonists, therefore, there could be no shortage of calm whites, which appeared on the furniture, and a natural wood pattern in the form of the lamellas. These, in addition to their interesting aesthetic qualities, also allowed us to soundproof the room a little and better isolate it from the sounds coming from the neighbouring flat.
Bright 4 You wardrobes with a classic look will accommodate a sizeable wardrobe of our protagonists. They contain a lot of height-adjustable shelves, which can be helpful in keeping things tidy. The whole arrangement is completed with two joined beds from the same collection. The possibility of disconnecting them will be an asset for future tenants of the flat.
Free access to clothing was achieved by dispensing with one of the bedside tables. Despite the lack of a tabletop on one side, the occupants can read comfortably before going to sleep, as wall lamps in white have been placed on either side of the upholstered headboard. The ability to adjust the angle of the light will also make it easier to put together a wardrobe in the morning.
COMPLETING THE ARRANGEMENT - BALCONY DESIGN IN A BLOCK OF FLATS WITH ALL-YEAR-ROUND FURNITURE
In addition to the interior design of the flat, it was also important for Kamil and Zosia to develop the outdoor space. The couple likes to spend time on their balcony and especially - to enjoy coffee and a self-baked cake. The space could therefore not lack furniture for relaxation.
When creating the design for the balcony online in the VOXBOX application, we tested several configurations, until finally we chose the Creative tables with a bent frame, the Handy table and the comfortable pouffes and armchairs from the Looz series. All of these pieces of furniture are made of weather-resistant and easy-to-clean materials. They are also lightweight and handy enough to go great indoors after the season.
We also made sure that the balcony had a warm and cosy atmosphere consistent with the design of the entire flat. Soft cushions, a bamboo tray and a lantern helped us to achieve this, which will build an atmospheric atmosphere during warm evenings. All the elements have been kept in subdued colours, so they should also appeal to future tenants if necessary.
